Writing About Offshore Wind at BOEM

Turning technical white papers into easy-to-read one-pagers

At BOEM, my job was to make complex offshore energy papers readable. This was useful to help scientists stay aware of internal projects.

I spent most of my time:

  1. Reading technical papers on grid integration, wind farm design, and environmental impact

  2. Pulling out the critical engineering constraints

  3. Writing one-page summaries that employees could easily read

The key challenge was balance - keeping the technical accuracy engineers needed while making it clear enough for policy work.

While I loved learning about offshore energy, this internship showed me that I preferred building things to writing about them. The technical communication skills stuck with me though. They help me explain my own engineering work now.
